Ms. Avram’s 6th Grade English and Social Studies Class!!
2008-2009
Welcome!!
Welcome to 6th Grade English and Social Studies! I am honored to have your child in
one of my classes this year, and I am excited to work with you and your child throughout
the year. I know that we will have a successful, exciting, and productive year in English
and Social Studies. I look forward to being a part of the academic progress your child
will make.
Parent/Teacher Relationship: I believe that a good parent/teacher relationship is
necessary for maximum school success. You are able to communicate with me through
email at kavram@sjfschool.net or at school (773) 445-4737. I update my blog daily, and
it contains important information about material we are covering in class, expectations
from students, test study guides and dates, project due dates, and much more. It can
be found at http://kellyavram.edublogs.org. Please visit frequently for current
information. There is a new policy in place regarding completion of homework during an
absence. Please check the parent/student handbook for detailed information.
Course Expectations and Goals for English and Social Studies: We will meet every
day for 50 minutes. Our English lessons are divided into units. Each unit will take us
about 4 to 6 weeks to complete. The units cover Grammar and Mechanics. Our Social
Studies lessons are also divided into units. Each unit is focused around certain areas of
the world. We will be studying Geography, Egypt, Greece, Ancient Rome, and the
Middle Ages. This year will be challenging and there is so much to learn! I expect your
child to come to class prepared every day and ready to learn. Every day is a new day
Our homework policy has been explained to your child, and is stated in detail within the
parent/student handbook. If your child does not have his/her homework on a particular
day, he/she will fill out a homework slip. This is to be signed by both you and your child.
The next day the homework slip and the homework should be turned into the teacher for
half credit. If no homework is turned in the next day then your child will receive no credit
for that assignment. Please also remind your child that it is his/her responsibility to turn
work into the teacher; the teacher will not ask students for late assignments.

Class Supplies and Grading: The following is a list of supplies that will be needed for
each class:
1 notebook, 1 folder, note cards, blue/black pens, pencil, red pen for correcting, loose
leaf paper.
**Grades will be based on the following:
English:
Homework: 15%
D.O.L.: 10%
Quizzes: 20%
Unit Tests: 30%
Papers: 25%

Social Studies:

Quizzes: 15%
Chapter Test: 20%

In closing, I would just like to say that I am looking forward to a great year working with
your child!
Sincerely,
Ms. Avram
