Week of May 14-18,2012

I hope that all of you mothers had a wonderful Mother’s Day! As we are nearing the end of school, I can see the students beginning to become more laid back in their effort for school work.  Please remind them that we still have a few weeks left of school and that they still need to give 110% effort into their school work and their studies.  I am constantly reminding them of this in school.  Here is our week at a glance, please always check your child’s assignment notebook for changes and/or updates.

Spelling:  We are beginning our review units this week.  This week we will cover Unit 6 and Unit 12.  Spelling lists will be sent home with your child and can also be found on our Spellingcity.com page.   For the test, I will chose 2 words from each unit.  The words should not be any surprise to your child as we have already mastered them. 

Reading:  We will begin reading, “Floating Home” this week.  This story will focus on plot.  The comprehension test will be on Thursday this week (we do not have school on Friday).  Please make sure that your child reads the story to you this week.

English:  We are continuing our work on Adverbs.  This week we will focus on adverbs telling the where and when.  Students will also complete a few projects to help reinforce the concept of adverbs.

Math:  We are still in Chapter 9 and learning to divide with remainders.  There will be a short quiz on Thursday on this concept. 

Chicago:  We are continuing our study of Chicago for the next couple of weeks.  If your child has not brought in his or her white t-shirt, can you please send one in with your child this week.  We will be starting the t-shirt project next Monday.

 

Week of May 7-11,2012

As we begin this week, we begin the start of “Spirit Week!”  This should be a fun filled week for the students.  Monday we are out of uniform and we can “roll” out of bed, Tuesday the students are allowed to wear their favorite team jersey along with their uniforms, Wednesday the students may support their favorite charity for $1.00 donation.  They will be out of uniform and wearing the color that supports their favorite charity.  Thursday students will be in uniform but can wear a Fisher shirt or wear Fisher blue.  Friday students will be out of uniform and wearing their Having “Sum” Fun t-shirts.

Here is our week at a glance:

Spelling:  Unit 35 will begin on Monday.  The students will take a pretest on Wednesday with a final test on Friday.  

Reading:  The story for this week is from  reading a chapter from Ramona Quimby, Age 8.  Our skill lesson is on visualizing.  We will have our comprehension test on Friday.  

English:  We will begin our final unit of English this year and cover Adverbs.  Our work will consist of book work along with projects to help us better understand Adverbs.

Math:  Chapter 7 test will be on Tuesday.  We reviewed today (Monday) in class.  The students seem to really be enjoying division.  We will move right into dividing with remainders.  This can be found in the second half of chapter 9.

Chicago:  We are continuing our work/study of Chicago.  The students went home today with the Chicago paper assignment which is due on May 21, 2012.  They were shown an example from a previous student and all requirements were reviewed and questions answered for this project.  

 

Week of April 30 – May 04, 2012

This week we will remain busy, here is our week at a glance:

Spelling:  Unit 34 will be covered this week.  The words this week end with -ly. We will have our pretest on Wednesday and final test will be on Friday.

Reading:  Our story this week will be “Mailing May.” 

English:  We will be finishing our pronoun unit with a test on Thursday.  The students will be reviewing today (Monday) and Tuesday.  Students should review the study guides as a preparation for the test.

Math:  Division is still our topic! Please keep reviewing multiplication facts with your child each night.  It will only help them.  I am planning on giving the Chapter 7 Math test one day next week.  I will keep you posted as to when it will be.

Chicago Unit:  We are beginning our final unit in Social Studies which always seems to be a favorite!  Chicago will be our focus until our field trip.  Your child will be learning fun and exciting facts about the city in which we live.  Chicago Field Trip forms are due by Friday, May 04, 2012 along with a white t-shirt.  All are welcome to accompany their child on this field trip.

Week of April 23-27,2012

Welcome to the first week of the Mathletics competition!  This will be a fun two weeks, I hope that your child is as excited as we are!  This week also look for Progress Reports which will be going home with your child on Wednesday the 25th, attached to the reports you will also find the “Chicago” field trip form. 

Here is our week at a glance:

Spelling:  Unit 33 will begin today and we will have our pretest on Wednesday and final test on Friday.

Reading:  We are entering our final unit in our reading books!  This week will be reading The Pinata Maker.  The students will have their comprehension test on Friday. 

English:  Continuing our study of pronouns, we will be having a test on pronouns next week. 

Math:  Division, the class is really enjoying this topic!  I love to see the enthusiasm they have when it comes to division.  This week will focus on dividing by 3, 4, 0, and 1.  The students will have a short quiz on Tuesday reviewing dividing by 2 and 5.  Please keep practicing the multiplication flashcards with your child every night.

Science:  We are finishing up Chapter 11.  Students will be given the study guide tomorrow (Tuesday) in class and we will review it and answer all questions together.  The test will be on Friday the 27th.

Week of April 16-20,2012

WOW … as I write this blog, it amazes me that we are in our final stretch of 3rd grade or should I say the school year.  As I have said in past blog entries I am not sure where this year has gone, but I do cherish everyday with your child.  To watch him or her change everyday is truly amazing and such a blessing that I can be part of it.

This week we will stay busy, here is our week at a glance:

Spelling:  Unit 32 will begin today and they will have their pretest on Wednesday with a final test on Friday.

Reading:  We will continue working on “Leah’s Pony.”  They will have their comprehension test on Wednesday, we have been reading this story since before break.  ”Leah’s Pony” has a strong focus on plot.  We have discussed what plot is and how we look for it in a story.  This week we will also have our Unit 5 Test.  The Unit 5 Test will be on Friday.  Students were given the essay today and for homework were asked to circle or highlight what they found to be the important details to include in an essay in which they will write this week in class.  

English:  We are beginning our work with pronouns.  Pronouns as we learned today replace a noun in a sentence.  

Math:  We reviewed multiplication and we will begin our learning of division this week.  Please make sure to keep reviewing multiplication facts with your child.  The facts should be mastered through the 12′s, it will only help with the learning of division. 

Science:  Chapter 11 was introduced today and we began by reviewing the vocabulary terms that will be seen in this chapter.  We will spend the next 2 weeks on this chapter with a test planned for next Friday (it may change, keep an eye out in your child’s planner for any changes).

Week of March 26-30,2012

Wow, I can not believe we only have 8 more days of school and then we are on Spring Break!  This year really is flying by.  We will keep busy this week, please remember to keep practicing multiplication facts with your child.  It will make all the difference. Here is our week at a glance:

Spelling:  Unit 31 will be introduced on Monday with a pretest on Wednesday and final test on Friday.  This week the words will focus on plural words that end in -s or -es

Reading:  Our story this week is “More Than Anyone Else.”  We will begin reading this story as a class on Tuesday with vocab word being completed on Monday.  The students will have their comprehension test on Friday.

English:  We will begin writing a paper this week.  The theme for the paper is friends.  The students will be writing the rough copy in class throughout the week.  We will complete a paragraph a day with editing along the way.  This paper will be wrapped up before spring break.

Math:  Multiplication will continue this week.  We will focus on multiplying with 3 digit numbers and with money.  Friday the students will be reviewing what has been learned this week.  I am planning on giving a quiz on multiplying 2 and 3 digit numbers next Wednesday the 4th of April.  Timed tests will continue this week.  Flashcards will be homework  every night.

Social Studies:  We are continuing learning about governments.  This week we will finish Chapter 8.  Please keep in mind that for Social Studies your child will only be tested when a unit is finished not a chapter. 

Week of February 27 – March 02, 2012

Wow, where has February gone? I can not believe that we are into our last few days of this month!  This week we will stay very busy while preparing for the Terra Nova test which will begin next week.  Your child will be completing review sheets in school which will be sent home and also be working on the practice test for the Terra Nova on Thursday and Friday.  A letter fully explaining the test was sent home in your child’s Friday Folder.

Spelling: Unit 26 will be covered this week.  We will be having our pre-test on Wednesday and final test will be given on Friday.

Reading: Our new story this week will be “Flight.”  We will be working on making judgements and constructing the meanings of words that are homophones.  They will have a comprehension test on Friday.  

English:  Continuing our study of adjectives, we will be working with a, an, and the; commas in a series; and synonyms and antonyms.  

Math:  Multiplication is continued this week.  Please continue working with your child at home on his or her facts.  These must be mastered by the end of 3rd grade.  They will have their timed test on Thursday this week.  Friday your child will be having a test on the factors of 0-9 and multiplying with 3 factors. 

Science:  Chapter 9 Test will be given on Wednesday.  The study guide was sent home last week.  As a class we answered the fill in the blank questions.  As always your child has an opportunity for extra-credit.  The extra-credit that is given is making and turning in flashcards that are used to prepare them for the test.

February 21-24, 2012

I hope that everyone enjoyed the nice long weekend!  I can not believe that Febraury is almost over and that Wednesday is Ash Wednesday.  Where has this year gone?

Here is a glance at our week, please as always be advised that it may change.  Just remember to check your child’s assignment book.

Spelling:  Unit 25 will be covered this week.  The words will have double letters in them.  They are posted on spellingcity.com.

Reading:  We will be reviewing at the beginning of the week for the Unit test which will be on Thursday.  Your child’s Friday letter that went home this past Friday states that it will be on Wednesday but with a full mass, it will be better to have this test on Thursday.  Please make sure that you proofread your child’s essay for the test.

Math:  Multiplication is continued.  Please remember to practice every night with your child. 

Science:  We are continuing working on Mass and Matter.  We will be finishing the chapter this week and there will be a Science test the last week in February.

English:  Adjectives are continued this week.

February 06-10,2012

With the week of Catholic Schools behind us, it is safe to say that our schedule is returning to normal.  Valentine’s Day is next Tuesday, we will be having a little party, if your child would like to bring in a treat with valentines, he or she may do so.  Here is our week at a glance

Spelling:  We are working on Unit 22 — Homophones.  Please make sure that when reviewing with your child they are able to know the definition/difference between the two words.  We will be having our pretest on Wednesday with final test on Friday.

Reading:  Our story this week is “One Grain of Rice.”  We will focus on comparing and contrasting, and looking for unfamiliar words.  The students will be tested on this story on Friday.

English:  We are wrapping up our novel “How to Eat Fried Worms.”  Students are also finishing Unit 7 and will be tested on this Unit on Thursday.  The unit consists of the verb be, contractions, and suffixes.  Students will be given a review sheet today and also another one tomorrow to help them prepare for the test.

Math:  Multiplication is where we are!  Students are very excited to be learning this concept.  We are working on Chapter 5 and students should be ready for a test by Friday.  I have asked the students that each night they review their flashcards for the factors of 0,1,2,5,and 9.  A review sheet will be sent home tomorrow (Tuesday) with your child.

Social Studies:  As we are nearing the end of Chapter 7 after learning about communities.  The students will have their Unit test, next Tuesday the 14th.  Look for a study guide to be sent home later on in the week. 

Jan. 30 – Feb. 03, 2012

Welcome to Catholic Schools Week 2012! This week your child will have special activities each day. It was great to see everyone yesterday at Open House.  I hope that you enjoyed your day.  Here is our week at a glance, please know that it may change due to the activities that are planned.

Spelling:  Unit 21 will be completed this week.  We will have our pretest on Wednesday and final test will be on Friday

Reading:  Our reading story for the week is “Thunder Cake.”  Students will be completing the Vocab Vibe sheet along with workbook pages for the story.  The story will be assigned for homework this week, please make sure that your child reads this story out loud to someone.

English:  We will continuing our work on Verbs.  This week we will focus on the “be” verbs (am, is, are, was, were); present and past tense verbs; contractions; and suffixes

Math:  The chapter that your child has been most looking forward to, will begin today.  We are starting Chapter 5, Multiplication.  Homework will be assigned each night this week.  Please also keep reviewing basic facts of addition and subtraction with your child, they can sometimes be easily forgotten when new concepts are introduced.

Social Studies:  We will begin our work on Chapter 5 this week.
